Bed bugs can’t fly because they don’t have working wings.
If you’ve seen an insect flying around your bedroom, you’re looking at something else.
That might sound obvious, but it’s one of the quickest ways to rule bed bugs out.
So how do they spread?
Bed bugs don’t need to fly.
They’re incredibly good hitchhikers.
They climb into luggage, clothing, handbags, second-hand furniture and even cardboard boxes. Once they’re inside, they simply wait until they’re carried somewhere new.
That’s why I often hear people say, “We haven’t travelled for months.” The bed bugs may have arrived weeks earlier and gone unnoticed.
Do they have wings at all?
Not in any useful sense.
Adult bed bugs have tiny wing pads, but they’re completely useless for flight. Over time, bed bugs evolved to live alongside humans rather than fly between hosts.
So if you’re trying to identify an insect and it has obvious wings, cross bed bugs off your list.
One thing I’ve noticed over the years
People often imagine bed bugs arriving through an open bedroom window.
I’ve never found that to be the case.
Almost every infestation I’ve investigated can be traced back to something that was brought into the property, whether that’s luggage, furniture, visitors or shared accommodation.
My advice
Don’t waste time looking for flying insects.
Instead, think about what has recently entered your home.
That question usually gets you much closer to the source of the problem.
