This is one of the biggest misconceptions about bed bugs.
They don’t build nests.
If you’re expecting something like a wasps’ nest or a birds’ nest, you won’t find one.
So why do people talk about bed bug nests?
Because bed bugs tend to gather in the same hiding places.
Over time, those hiding places can contain:
- Live bed bugs
- Eggs
- Shed skins
- Droppings
When everything is together, people naturally describe it as a nest.
What would I expect to see?
If I lift a headboard or dismantle a bed frame, I might find dozens of bed bugs hiding together in a narrow crack.
There won’t be any structure they’ve built.
Just a collection of insects and the evidence they’ve left behind.
Something that surprises many homeowners
People often spend hours looking for one obvious “nest.”
Meanwhile, the infestation is hiding inside a gap only a few millimetres wide.
That’s why inspections need to be methodical rather than rushed.
My advice
Don’t waste time searching for a nest.
Instead, look for the signs that bed bugs have been living somewhere for a while:
- Droppings
- Shed skins
- Eggs
- Live insects
Together, those signs tell a much clearer story.
