Yes—but probably not in the way most people imagine.
When people discover bed bugs, one of their biggest fears is that every item of clothing in the house has become infested. Fortunately, that’s rarely the case.
Bed bugs don’t treat clothes as a permanent home. They’re interested in staying close to a food source, which usually means the places where people spend long periods resting or sleeping.
That said, clothing can still play an important role in how bed bugs spread.
Why would a bed bug hide in clothing?
Bed bugs are opportunistic.
If clothes are left on the floor beside an infested bed, piled on a chair or stored in an open laundry basket, they can easily crawl into the folds of the fabric.
They’re not there because they want the clothes.
They’re simply using them as another convenient hiding place.
Can they live in wardrobes?
It’s possible, but it’s not usually where an infestation begins.
Wardrobes are generally less attractive than beds because people don’t remain there for hours at a time.
However, if a wardrobe is very close to an infested bed, or if clothing has been moved from an affected room without being inspected, bed bugs can end up inside.
Pay particular attention to:
- Clothes stored on the floor.
- Laundry baskets.
- Shoe racks.
- Wardrobe corners.
- Shelving close to the bed.
Can bed bugs travel on clothes?
Yes.
This is one of the ways infestations spread between homes, hotels and workplaces.
If a bed bug hides in the folds of a jacket, hoodie or pair of trousers, it may be carried somewhere else before dropping off.
Fortunately, bed bugs don’t cling to people in the same way as lice or ticks.
They usually hide in the clothing when it’s not being worn.
What about clean washing?
Washing clothes at an appropriate temperature and thoroughly drying them can help deal with bed bugs on clothing.
Always follow the care instructions on the garment, as different fabrics tolerate different temperatures.
If you’re dealing with an active infestation, it’s often sensible to bag laundry before moving it through the house to avoid accidentally spreading insects.
Don’t panic about your wardrobe
We’ve visited homes where people have thrown away bags of perfectly good clothes because they assumed everything was infested.
In most cases, that simply isn’t necessary.
A systematic inspection and appropriate treatment are usually far more effective than replacing clothing.

If clothes are hanging neatly in a wardrobe on the opposite side of the room, they’re usually much lower on my inspection list than the laundry basket sitting next to the bed.
Bed bugs like convenience.
The closer something is to where people sleep, the more interested I become.

If you’re concerned about clothing, inspect and deal with the areas closest to the bed first.
Bag worn clothes before moving them through the house and avoid leaving piles of laundry beside the bed until you’re confident the infestation has been eliminated.
