Bed Bug Heat Treatment Case Study: 6-Bedroom House in Woking, Surrey

Bed Bug Heat Treatment Project in Woking, Surrey

Project Overview

When a family in Woking, Surrey, began noticing signs of a possible bed bug infestation in their 6-bedroom home, they turned to Bug Blitz for a fast, effective solution. Bed bugs were confirmed in two of the bedrooms, but given how easily these pests travel between rooms, the customer opted for a full-property bed bug heat treatment rather than risk a partial fix.

Due to the size of the house, the treatment was carried out over two days, giving our team the time needed to heat every room to the temperatures required to eliminate bed bugs at every life stage.

Andy Miller, our lead Pest Controller and bed bug specialist, recommended treating not just the two affected bedrooms but also the hallway, stairs, lounge, and kitchen. These high-traffic areas are common transfer points where bed bugs can hitch a ride on clothing, bags, or furniture, making them a priority for any thorough bed bug treatment in Woking homes.

Preparing the Property

Getting a house ready for heat treatment takes careful preparation, and our team talked the customer through every step. Ahead of the visit, the customer removed:

  • Food left out in the open, such as fruit and bread
  • Items that could melt, evaporate, spoil or warp, including candles and scented products
  • Wine, aerosols, musical instruments, oil paintings and other valuable artwork
  • Medications, soap, make-up and aftershave
  • Pets, including fish

Dried food stored in kitchen cupboards was safe to leave in place. Further preparation included opening drawers and wardrobe doors, and removing winter clothing so heat could reach every fibre and fabric fold where bed bugs might be hiding.

Because the property had a well-stocked bookshelf, we also advised opening each book and standing it on its end, allowing heat to pass through the pages and reach any bed bugs sheltering within. Mattresses, pillows and cushions were turned onto their sides by our team so heat could penetrate all surfaces evenly.

The Heat Treatment Process

Bed bug heat treatment doesn’t rely on direct heat guns or chemicals. Instead, Bug Blitz uses industrial-grade fan heaters to raise and maintain a consistent temperature at 70 degrees throughout the property, one that’s lethal to bed bugs but safe for the building itself. Doors and windows were sealed to hold the heat at the right level for the full duration of treatment.

The two-day treatment plan was structured as follows:

  • Day 1: Upstairs rooms treated for 6 hours, with the customer staying downstairs
  • Day 2: Downstairs rooms treated for 6 hours, with the customer vacating the property

Throughout each session, our team repositioned furniture, bedding and belongings every two hours to maximise heat exposure and ensure no cold spots remained where bed bugs could survive.

Our equipment also uses 12 carefully positioned heat sensors that indicated the heat in different areas of the room. The sensors are linked to our heat monitoring software to ensure the 70 degrees temperature remains consistent and that there are no ‘heat leaks’. Leaks or drafts into a room can lead to a drop in temperature and failure in the treatment. We continually monitored the temperature throughout the treatment.

The Result

Following treatment, our team carried out a full property review and found signs of dead bed bugs in the two originally affected bedrooms as well as the hallway, exactly the kind of transfer point Andy had flagged as a priority. This confirmed the infestation had been eradicated across the whole house, giving the customer confidence that no pockets of activity had been missed.

Why Choose Bug Blitz for Bed Bug Treatment in Woking

This case highlights why a whole-property approach is often the safest route when tackling bed bugs, particularly in larger Surrey homes where pests can spread undetected between rooms. Our heat treatment method offers a chemical-free way to eliminate bed bugs at every stage of their lifecycle, from eggs through to adults, in a single visit.

“Bed bugs don’t stay where you find them, they travel. That’s why we always look beyond the rooms a customer has spotted a problem in, especially busy areas like hallways and lounges where transfer risk is highest. With heat treatment, there’s nowhere left for them to hide.”Andy Miller, Lead Pest Controller, Bug Blitz
