What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like?

This is probably the question we’re asked more than any other.

Unfortunately, it’s also one of the hardest to answer.

That’s because bed bug bites don’t have one unmistakable appearance.

Some people develop obvious, itchy red welts.

Others barely react at all.

Some don’t react in any noticeable way.

Where do they usually appear?

Bed bugs feed on exposed skin while you’re asleep.

That means bites are commonly found on:

  • Arms.
  • Hands.
  • Shoulders.
  • Neck.
  • Face.
  • Lower legs.

Areas covered by pyjamas are often less affected, although that’s certainly not a rule.

Do they always appear in lines?

You’ve probably heard the phrase:

“Breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

Sometimes bed bug bites do appear in small lines or clusters.

Sometimes they’re completely random.

It’s helpful if that pattern is present, but I’d never identify bed bugs from bite patterns alone.

One thing we’ve learnt

Two people can sleep in the same bed.

One wakes up covered in bites.

The other has no marks whatsoever.

That doesn’t mean only one person was bitten.

It simply means their immune systems reacted differently.

It’s one of the reasons bites are such unreliable evidence on their own.

🔍 Inspection Insight

Whenever someone sends us photographs of bites, the first thing we say is:

“Let’s inspect the room.”

A photograph of a bite can suggest possibilities.

It can’t confirm bed bugs.

Only the evidence around the bed can do that.

✅ What I’d Do Next

If you’re waking up with unexplained bites, don’t rely on your skin alone.

Carry out a thorough inspection of the bed, mattress and surrounding furniture.

Finding physical evidence is always more reliable than trying to identify bites.
